KHAS Economics – Contemporary Debates: Prof. Dr. Barry Eichengreen

The first guest of Contemporary Debates organized by Kadir Has University’s Department of Economics is Prof. Dr. Barry Eichengreen from the University of California, Berkeley on October 13, 2021, at 7 pm.

Professor Eichengreen will introduce his new book, In Defense of Public Debt. The book describes a millennium of public debt history, spanning Medieval Europe to the COVID-19 pandemic and crisis. It recounts the role of public debt in state building, in meeting external threats, in fostering economic development and in building the welfare state. It also describes prominent episodes where public debt issuance went wrong – including in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century.
